CHAPTER 5. THE CONFESSION AT THE TABLE

Margaret finally sat down.

Her hands were trembling.

Daniel placed the documents in front of her.

Tell me the truth.

She admitted that she had secretly invested family money into a private development project.

The project failed.

She needed time to recover the loss.

So she created the story about selling the lake house.

The four million dollars had actually come from another Carter account.

Money had simply been moved around to hide the original loss.

Daniel stared at her.

And my mother found out.

Margaret nodded.

She wanted to tell you.

But I begged her not to.

Daniel looked furious.

She died carrying this secret because you asked her to protect you?

Margaret began crying.

I thought I could fix it.

Emma quietly stepped back from the table.

Daniel looked at her.

You knew all of this for six months?

Emma nodded.

Why didnt you tell me sooner?

Because your mother told me not to.

She wanted everyone here when the truth came out.

Daniel looked around the dining room.

Now he understood why.

No private excuses.

No changed stories.

No one could later claim they had heard something different.

Eleanor had arranged one final family meeting without ever entering the room.
