Daniel noticed something else in Victoria’s hand.
A passport.
Lily’s passport.
He immediately held out his hand.
Give it to me.
Victoria hesitated.
Daniel repeated himself.
Victoria finally handed it over.
Daniel opened the passport.
Then he looked toward the suitcase again.
Clothes.
A small blanket.
Several of Lily’s favorite toys.
Everything had already been packed.
Daniel stared at Victoria.
How long have you been planning this?
She did not answer.
Then Lily whispered.
She packed my things yesterday.
Daniel looked at his daughter.
Yesterday?
Lily nodded.
Victoria had been preparing to leave before Daniel even knew there was a problem.
Daniel placed the passport in his jacket.
Victoria suddenly stepped toward him.
Daniel, please listen.
He backed away with Lily.
No.
You listen.
Nobody takes my daughter anywhere without telling me.
Victoria looked frightened.
Then Daniel saw something behind her.
A large decorative cabinet filled with collectibles.
Victoria kept glancing toward it.
Daniel followed her eyes.
And suddenly he knew there was more.
