Daniel Carter came home earlier than expected.
The first thing he noticed was the suitcase.
A large brown suitcase sat open in the middle of the living room.
Beside it stood Victoria in a sparkling evening dress.
Daniel frowned.
What are you doing?
Victoria immediately moved in front of the suitcase.
Nothing.
Then Daniel heard a child crying.
His expression changed.
He stepped around her.
Inside the suitcase was his little daughter Lily.
She was frightened and trying to climb out.
Daniel rushed forward.
Lily.
He lifted her into his arms.
She immediately wrapped both arms around his neck.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
What is going on?
Victoria stared at him.
You were not supposed to be home yet.
Daniel froze.
That sentence told him everything.
He held Lily tighter.
Then he noticed something on the table beside Victoria.
Two airline boarding passes.
And one of them had Lily’s name on it.
