CHAPTER 6. THE NEXT TIME GRANDMA VISITED

One month later, Eleanor returned to the Carter house.

This time she stopped near the doorway instead of immediately reaching for Lily.

Claire was holding the baby.

Daniel stood beside them.

Eleanor looked nervous.

Can I say hello?

Claire nodded.

Of course.

Eleanor moved closer slowly.

Lily watched her.

Eleanor smiled.

Hi, sweetheart.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then Lily reached one small hand toward her.

Eleanor smiled through tears.

Claire did not hand Lily over immediately.

And Eleanor did not demand it.

She simply stood there and talked softly to her granddaughter.

Daniel watched quietly.

The family had not forgotten what happened at the dinner table.

The broken glass.

The shouting.

The police at the door.

But something important had changed.

Eleanor finally understood that being a grandmother did not mean she could ignore the parents.

And Claire finally knew she did not have to stay silent just to keep the peace.

Lily smiled.

That was enough for everyone to begin again.
