CHAPTER 4. WHY CLAIRE HAD CALLED FOR HELP

Claire moved toward the front door with Lily.

Daniel followed.

Where are you going?

Claire answered calmly.

I already called someone.

Eleanor stared at her.

Who?

Before Claire could answer, a knock came from the front entrance.

Two police officers stood outside.

Eleanors face changed immediately.

You called the police?

Claire nodded.

Because this is not the first time you ignored what we told you about Lily.

Daniel looked confused.

Claire explained that earlier that week Eleanor had taken Lily out without telling either parent.

She had also repeatedly refused to return the baby when Claire asked.

Daniel looked toward his mother.

Is that true?

Eleanor answered.

I am her grandmother.

Claire shook her head.

That does not make you her parent.

One officer stepped inside.

We are here because a family member reported repeated concerns involving the child.

Eleanor looked stunned.

For the first time, she realized the argument was no longer staying inside the family.
