CHAPTER 6. THE NEXT TIME THEY FACED EACH OTHER

Three months later, the platoon gathered around the same red mat.

Emma stood on one side.

Ryan stood on the other.

But this time, nobody was laughing.

Ryan had trained with Emma almost every morning.

He was more controlled.

More patient.

And far less interested in proving anything.

The instructor raised one hand.

Begin.

Ryan moved carefully.

Emma smiled.

Better.

They exchanged several controlled movements.

No reckless charges.

No frustration.

No ego.

When the round ended, neither had dominated the other.

The instructor nodded.

That is training.

Ryan offered Emma his hand.

She shook it.

One soldier nearby joked.

Who won?

Ryan answered before Emma could.

Everyone who learned something.

Emma looked at him.

Finally.

He smiled.

Took me long enough.

The soldiers laughed.

Months earlier, Ryan had stepped onto the mat believing Emma needed to prove she belonged there.

Now he understood the truth.

She never needed his approval.

He needed the lesson.
