Chapter 6 – The Last Vote

The council assembled forty-eight hours later.

Same walnut table.

Same six chairs.

Different Dominic Vale.

He entered without assistance.

The brace remained on his leg, correctly adjusted under Dr. Mercer’s supervision.

His cane touched the floor.

Once.

Every conversation stopped.

Arthur sat at the far end beside his attorney.

His temporary detention had ended while investigators continued building the case, but he had made the mistake of believing that meant he was safe.

Dominic sat.

Julian stood behind him.

Vincent remained near the door.

Nobody spoke.

Dominic placed a folder on the table.

“You wanted a vote.”

Arthur smiled.

“I still do.”

“Good.”

Dominic looked around.

“For three weeks, several people in this room were told my health was deteriorating.”

Nobody moved.

“That was true.”

Arthur’s smile widened.

Dominic continued.

“But the reason was false.”

He placed photographs of the brace mechanism on the table.

“My rehabilitation equipment was deliberately altered.”

One council member frowned.

“By whom?”

“Arthur Voss and Peter Sloan.”

Arthur’s attorney immediately spoke.

“That allegation is disputed.”

Dominic nodded.

“Then let’s discuss evidence.”

Angela entered.

Arthur’s expression changed.

She described everything.

The questions.

The bribe.

The threats.

The brace.

The maintenance room.

Then Vincent presented access records.

Security gaps.

Messages.

Financial transfers.

Raymond Pike’s statement regarding the crash.

Finally Dominic placed his father’s notebook on the table.

Arthur stared at it.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in his eyes.

“Where did you get that?”

Dominic smiled faintly.

“You recognize it.”

Arthur realized his mistake.

Again.

The room became silent.

Dominic opened the notebook.

“My father discovered financial theft inside the organization before his death.”

Arthur stood.

“This meeting is over.”

“No.”

One of the council members spoke.

It was Thomas Reed, the oldest man at the table.

“You demanded this vote, Arthur.”

Arthur looked around.

Nobody moved to leave.

Thomas folded his hands.

“Sit down.”

Arthur sat.

For decades, Arthur had manipulated men through secrets.

Now his own secrets surrounded him.

Dominic looked at the council.

“There will be no vote transferring authority to Arthur Voss.”

Arthur laughed.

“You don’t decide that.”

“You’re right.”

Dominic looked around the table.

“They do.”

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Thomas pushed Arthur’s prepared transfer document away.

Another council member did the same.

Then another.

Arthur watched his support disappear.

Not because Dominic threatened them.

Because Arthur’s deception had made him impossible to trust.

The final man closed the folder.

Arthur had lost.

But Dominic wasn’t finished.

“The old organization ends here.”

That surprised everyone.

Julian looked at him.

Dominic continued.

“No hidden accounts. No intimidation. No protection arrangements. No businesses operating outside the law.”

Arthur laughed bitterly.

“You think you can wash the Vale name clean?”

“No.”

Dominic looked at him.

“I think I can decide what it means from now on.”

“You’ll destroy everything your father built.”

“My father built enough fear to poison his sons.”

Julian lowered his eyes.

Dominic continued.

“I’m not preserving that.”

Arthur stared at him.

“You’re weak.”

Dominic looked down at the brace.

Then back up.

“A four-year-old noticed something none of us did because she wasn’t afraid to look closely.”

He leaned forward.

“That isn’t weakness.”
