CHAPTER 5. THE COLONEL SPOKE TO THE ROOM

Colonel Hayes turned toward the soldiers.

“Everyone here needs to understand something.”

The room stayed silent.

“Sergeant Sullivan was judged before the investigation was complete.”

Maya stood beside her desk.

The colonel continued.

“She kept doing her job while people around her decided they already knew the truth.”

Several soldiers looked uncomfortable.

Hayes looked toward Maya.

“You showed professionalism when this organization failed to show you the same.”

Maya answered quietly.

“I only wanted the evidence checked, sir.”

Hayes nodded.

“And you were right to demand that.”

For the first time in months, Maya no longer needed to defend herself.
