CHAPTER 4. WHAT MONEY COULDN’T BUY

I entered the boardroom at exactly noon.

Daniel was already there.

Ashley was not.

Neither were the smiles he wore in magazine interviews.

He looked exhausted.

“You planned this.”

I sat across from him.

“No. I prepared for it.”

The board members took their seats.

Rebecca sat beside me.

The internal compliance director opened the investigation.

Transfers connected to Daniel’s private accounts.

Corporate money spent on Ashley.

Contracts awarded without proper review.

Company resources used for personal expenses.

Daniel stared at me.

“You’ve been collecting this for months.”

“Yes.”

“And you stayed with me?”

“For a while.”

“Why?”

I thought about the woman I had been.

The wife who kept finding explanations.

The partner who believed protecting Daniel meant protecting the company.

“Because I wasn’t ready to admit what you had become.”

He looked away.

Then he asked quietly.

“What do you want?”

I looked toward the board.

“Independent control of the investigation.”

“Protection of company assets.”

“Full review of every contract you approved.”

“And?”

I looked directly at him.

“You step down while the investigation continues.”

Daniel laughed once.

But there was no confidence in it.

“You’re destroying everything we built.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“I’m protecting what we built from you.”

Three months later, Daniel was no longer CEO.

The board appointed an interim executive.

Several suspicious transactions were reversed.

My ownership remained intact.

The divorce continued.

I moved into a smaller house with Noah.

One evening, he asked me.

“Are we poor now?”

I laughed.

“No.”

“Then why don’t we live in the big house?”

I looked at him.

“Because a big house isn’t the same thing as a good home.”

He thought about that.

Then nodded.

Daniel believed money could buy loyalty.

Silence.

Control.

Even forgiveness.

What he never understood was that the most valuable thing I owned was never the house or the company.

It was the ability to leave when staying finally cost too much.
