Daniel opened the second folder.
Inside were letters written by his father before his death.
One was addressed directly to Claire.
Daniel read it aloud.
Claire.
If anything happens to me, make sure Emily receives what I set aside for her.
Daniel stopped.
He looked at his mother.
Eleanor looked terrified.
Claire explained that Robert had discovered serious problems inside several family investments.
He feared some relatives would try to move assets after his death.
So he placed part of his estate into a separate trust for Emily.
Daniel continued reading.
Another letter warned that Eleanor strongly disagreed with the decision.
Emily looked toward her grandmother.
Why?
Eleanor finally broke.
Because she was a child.
Daniel shook his head.
Thats not the real reason.
Eleanor raised her voice.
That money belonged to this family.
Claire answered.
Emily is this family.
Eleanor looked at her.
You were going to take everything away from us.
Claire stared back.
No.
I was going to make sure your granddaughter received what her grandfather left her.
Daniel slowly understood.
Claire had not caused the family conflict.
She had simply discovered the secret Eleanor had spent years protecting.
