CHAPTER 4. THE LESSON BRIGGS NEVER FORGOT

Briggs struggled to regain his balance.

Avery stayed calm.

No celebration.

No insults.

She simply remained ready.

The soldiers around them had stopped laughing completely.

Commander Hayes watched from the front row.

Briggs looked at Avery.

“How did you know?”

Avery answered quietly.

“You showed me.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“Every time you get angry, you rush. Every time you rush, you become predictable.”

The crowd became silent.

Avery stepped back.

Briggs looked around at the hundreds of soldiers recording him.

For days, he had tried to convince everyone Avery did not belong there.

Now nobody was questioning her.

They were questioning him.

Avery looked directly at Briggs.

“Strength isn’t the same as control.”

Then she walked away from the center of the mat.

Commander Hayes gave her a small nod.

Briggs remained standing alone.

He had entered the tournament expecting to embarrass Avery in front of the entire base.

Instead, everyone had just watched him learn the hardest lesson of his career.

He had underestimated the wrong woman.
