My attorney requested a formal custody review.
Sarah arrived with my ex-husband looking confident.
She smiled at me across the conference table.
My ex looked annoyed.
“This is ridiculous. Sarah loves Emma.”
I nodded.
“I hope she does.”
Then my attorney placed the printed messages on the table.
Sarah stopped smiling.
My ex picked them up.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
His face changed.
“Sarah… what is this?”
She immediately tried to explain.
“I was only thinking about what was best for Emma.”
My attorney pointed to one message.
The more she prefers me, the less she will fight leaving Jennifer.
The room became silent.
My ex stared at Sarah.
“You were planning this?”
Sarah started crying.
She insisted she had never meant to hurt anyone.
That she loved Emma.
That she believed our house had too many rules.
I looked at her.
“Loving my daughter was never the problem.”
She looked at me.
“Teaching her that loving you required replacing me was.”
She had no answer.
The custody agreement was not suddenly rewritten that day.
But new boundaries were established immediately.
Sarah could not discuss custody with Emma.
She could not encourage comparisons between homes.
And all major parenting decisions had to remain between Emma’s father and me.
For the first time, someone had put limits around Sarah’s influence.
