CHAPTER 4. DANIEL CAME HOME

Headlights suddenly swept across the backyard.

Victoria turned.

Daniels truck stopped near the house.

He jumped out before the engine had fully settled.

Sophie screamed.

Dad.

Daniel ran toward the enclosure.

Victoria stepped between him and the children.

Daniel stopped several feet away.

Move.

Victoria raised both hands.

Daniel, I can explain.

He looked past her.

Sophie and Noah were soaked and frightened.

Daniel looked back at Victoria.

Open it.

She did not move.

Daniel repeated himself.

Open the gate.

Ethan appeared from the side yard with two police officers behind him.

Victorias face went pale.

One officer stepped forward.

Maam, move away from the enclosure.

Victoria finally dropped the rope.

Daniel opened the gate.

Sophie ran straight into him.

Noah followed.

Daniel wrapped both children in his arms.

Sophie was shaking.

I tried to call you.

Daniel held her tighter.

I know.

The officer looked toward Victoria.

Why were these children locked outside?

Victoria answered quickly.

It was a misunderstanding.

Sophie looked up.

No.

She was looking for the phone.

Daniel slowly turned toward Victoria.

What phone?

Sophie pointed toward Noahs jacket.

The one with all her messages.
