CHAPTER 2. THE HOUSE THEY NEVER KNEW EXISTED

I packed two suitcases.

My medication.

My jewelry box.

Important documents.

And the framed photograph of Robert that had sat beside my bed for twenty-seven years.

Nobody offered to help.

Daniel stood in the hallway with his arms crossed.

He still believed I was bluffing.

Melissa followed me upstairs.

“You’re really going to embarrass yourself like this?”

I zipped my suitcase.

“No.”

“I think I’m finally going to stop embarrassing myself.”

She frowned.

“What does that mean?”

I looked around the bedroom.

For years, I had convinced myself that helping family meant accepting whatever came with it.

Daniel’s demands.

Melissa’s entitlement.

Their constant assumption that my money was family money whenever they needed it.

But only my problem whenever I needed respect.

I carried my bags downstairs.

My grandson Ethan ran toward me.

“Grandma, where are you going?”

I hugged him.

“Somewhere nearby.”

“Are you coming back?”

I looked toward Daniel.

“I’ll always see you.”

Then I kissed Ethan’s forehead.

At 9:30 that night, I drove away.

The snow became heavier as I headed toward Lancaster.

Forty minutes later, I pulled into the driveway of my new home.

One floor.

Two bedrooms.

A small garden.

No staircase.

No shouting.

No people waiting for me to pay their bills.

I unlocked the front door.

The house smelled like fresh paint and wood.

I placed Robert’s photograph on the fireplace mantel.

Then I sat alone in the living room.

For the first time in years, the silence felt peaceful.

At 11:58 PM, I opened my laptop.

Daniel had spent years joking that I could not handle online banking.

He was about to learn how wrong he was.
