For one terrible second, the entire park went silent.
Then everyone started shouting.
The little girl screamed.
Titan stood over her, keeping her down with his front paws.
People began running toward them.
“He’s attacking her!”
A man grabbed a heavy branch from the ground.
Another person shouted for someone to stop the dog.
My heart felt like it had dropped into my stomach.
Titan had never attacked an innocent person.
But from where I was standing, I could not explain what I was seeing.
I ran faster.
“Titan, OFF!”
He ignored me again.
The girl was frightened and trying to move.
Titan refused to let her stand.
I was barely twenty yards away.
My mind was racing.
My career could be over.
Titan could be removed from service.
But none of that mattered compared with protecting the child.
I reached them and dropped to my knees.
The girl’s mother rushed toward us.
The crowd was closing in.
I grabbed Titan’s tactical collar with both hands.
“Titan! OFF!”
Then I finally looked into my partner’s face.
And everything changed.
