CHAPTER 1. THE WILL THEY THOUGHT ENDED EVERYTHING

“The will is clear,” my father’s lawyer announced. “She gets nothing.”

The judge nodded.

Then my family actually applauded.

My stepmother Elaine covered her mouth, pretending to be emotional while a smile showed behind her fingers.

My half brother Lucas leaned back with his arms stretched across the bench.

My aunt whispered,

“Finally.”

I stood alone at the table holding a thin brown folder.

My father, Richard Whitman, had died three months earlier.

To the public, he had been a respected hotel developer.

To me, he was the father who slowly disappeared from my life after my mother died.

He remarried Elaine.

Moved me into a guest room.

Allowed her to call me “the reminder.”

When I turned eighteen, I left with two suitcases and built a life without them.

Now Dad was dead.

And suddenly they wanted me back.

Not because they missed me.

Because they wanted a court order confirming that I had no claim to anything.

Mr. Vance, my father’s attorney, spent nearly an hour reading the will.

Hotels.

Investment accounts.

The mountain house.

Family trusts.

Even my mother’s jewelry.

Everything supposedly went to Elaine and Lucas.

Mr. Vance looked at me.

“Ms. Whitman chose estrangement from her father.”

Lucas laughed quietly.

The judge reached toward his gavel.

That was when I opened my folder.

Mr. Vance frowned.

“Your Honor, this matter is settled.”

I placed the first document on the table.

“No.”

The judge looked at me.

“What are you claiming, Ms. Whitman?”

I met Mr. Vance’s eyes.

“You forgot one thing.”

Then I slid the document forward.

“My father didn’t own half of what he left them.”
