The charity gala was already crowded when two-year-old Lily wandered away from the table.
Her father Daniel Carter was speaking with investors across the ballroom.
Near one marble column stood an expensive blue-and-white porcelain vase.
Lily reached toward it.
Before she could touch it, Victoria rushed over.
She grabbed Lily by the arm and pulled her back.
What are you doing?
Lily immediately started crying.
Victoria leaned closer.
You never listen.
Several guests turned toward them.
Then something fell from Victoria’s handbag.
A large yellow envelope.
Lily pointed at it.
Victoria quickly tried to pick it up.
But Daniel had already noticed his daughter crying.
He hurried across the ballroom.
Lily immediately reached for him.
Daddy.
Daniel lifted her into his arms.
Then he looked down.
The yellow envelope was still lying on the marble floor.
And Victoria suddenly looked terrified.
