CHAPTER 1. THE CONVERSATION AT THE RECEPTION

Commander Megan Carter was attending a high-level military reception when a wealthy woman in a sparkling gown began talking too freely.

The woman smiled confidently.

“My husband tells me everything.”

Megan looked at her.

“Everything?”

“He trusts me.”

An admiral standing nearby suddenly turned.

“What operation did she mention?”

Megan calmly repeated the classified codename.

The admiral’s expression hardened immediately.

“That information is restricted.”

The woman laughed nervously.

“My husband probably heard it somewhere.”

Megan watched her carefully.

Then the woman mentioned something else.

The target date.

Megan’s expression changed.

That was not information someone simply overheard.

The woman finally noticed the mood around her had changed.

Her smile disappeared.

Megan reached into her pocket and removed a small recorder.

The woman stared at it.

“What is that?”

Megan answered quietly.

“Evidence.”
