CHAPTER 3. THE DOOR FINALLY OPENED

Daniel unlocked the padlock.

He pulled the door open immediately.

Sophie came out first.

Noah followed right behind her.

Both children ran straight into their fathers arms.

Daniel dropped to one knee and held them tightly.

Are you okay?

Sophie nodded.

Noah was still crying.

Daniel looked them over carefully.

They were frightened but safe.

He turned toward Victoria.

She was standing several feet away.

Daniel asked again.

What happened?

Victoria answered.

They went into your office after I told them not to.

Sophie looked up.

No.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

Tell me.

Sophie hesitated.

Then she said.

We found something.

Victoria immediately interrupted.

Sophie.

Daniel stood.

Let her finish.

Sophie continued.

There was a folder on your desk.

Victoria told us not to touch it.

But Noah saw her put it there.

Daniel frowned.

What folder?

Victoria became noticeably nervous.

Nothing important.

Sophie looked toward the mansion.

The one with your name on it.

Daniel stared at Victoria.

Then he understood something.

The playhouse punishment might not have been about disobedience at all.

Victoria may have been trying to stop the children from telling him what they had seen.
