CHAPTER 3. THE ACCOUNTING THEY NEVER EXPECTED

The hearing was postponed immediately.

The judge ordered a full accounting of every asset connected to my mother’s trust.

That was when the real damage began.

My attorney had spent eight months tracing property records, corporate filings, and old banking documents.

We already knew what the accounting would find.

My father had borrowed against trust-owned hotels.

He had used rental income to fund unrelated investments.

He had transferred trust property into companies controlled jointly with Elaine.

And after I became an adult, he continued acting as though I had no rights at all.

But the trust agreement was clear.

His authority should have ended when I turned twenty-five.

I was thirty-four.

For nine years, assets belonging to my trust had remained under his control without authorization.

Elaine called me that evening.

I almost did not answer.

Then curiosity won.

“What are you doing?” she demanded.

I stayed calm.

“Reading documents.”

“You’re destroying your father’s legacy.”

I almost laughed.

“My mother built the part of his legacy you’re trying to inherit.”

She went silent.

Then she changed tactics.

“Lucas is your brother.”

“Yes.”

“You would take everything away from him?”

“No.”

I looked through the accounting report.

“I’m taking back what was never his.”

A week later, Lucas called.

His voice sounded completely different.

“Did Dad know?”

“Yes.”

“How can you be sure?”

I opened the final document in my folder.

A letter written by Richard himself.

Dated eighteen months before his death.

Addressed to me.

He admitted he knew the trust should have been returned to my control years earlier.

But he was afraid that doing so would expose how much he had already moved.

Lucas stopped speaking.

Then he whispered.

“So he knew.”

“Yes.”

For once, I did not enjoy being right.
