CHAPTER 2. THE COMPANY MY MOTHER NEVER GAVE HIM

The courtroom went silent.

Mr. Vance picked up the document.

His confident expression changed almost immediately.

It was not a will.

It was a shareholder agreement dated twenty-eight years earlier.

My mother, Catherine Whitman, had inherited substantial property from her own father before marrying Richard.

Those assets included three small hotels and several parcels of commercial land.

Richard later expanded them into the Whitman Hospitality Group.

But expansion did not mean ownership.

My mother had retained fifty-one percent of the original holding company.

When she died, her shares did not automatically transfer to my father.

They transferred into the Catherine Whitman Family Trust.

I was the sole beneficiary.

The judge leaned forward.

“Was this trust disclosed during probate?”

Mr. Vance said nothing.

I opened the next document.

“My father was trustee while I was a minor. He had management authority. Not ownership.”

Elaine suddenly stood.

“That’s impossible.”

The judge told her to sit down.

I continued.

“For twenty years, my father treated trust assets as though they were his personal property.”

Lucas stopped smiling.

Mr. Vance flipped rapidly through the paperwork.

Then he looked toward Elaine.

The mountain house was listed.

So were two hotels.

A downtown office building.

And several investment accounts.

All assets Richard had attempted to leave them.

The judge looked at Mr. Vance.

“Counsel?”

He swallowed.

“If these documents are authentic, the estate may not have authority to distribute those assets.”

Elaine’s face went white.

I looked at the necklace around her neck.

My mother’s necklace.

Then I placed another document on the table.

“And that jewelry was specifically listed as trust property too.”

Elaine instinctively touched the necklace.

For the first time that morning, nobody in my family was applauding.
