I started with Daniel and Melissa’s townhouse mortgage.
Automatic payment canceled.
Then their SUV insurance.
Canceled.
The family phone plan.
Separated.
Credit card.
Frozen.
Private-school payment for expenses Daniel had promised to cover himself.
Stopped.
I did not touch anything belonging directly to my grandchildren.
Their education accounts remained protected.
Their medical coverage remained active.
This was not revenge against children.
It was the end of financing two adults who had mistaken generosity for obligation.
Then I changed every password.
Banking.
Investment accounts.
Insurance.
Property records.
At 8:04 the next morning, Daniel called.
I let it ring.
Again.
Again.
Then Melissa.
Then Daniel again.
Finally I answered.
“What did you do?”
His voice was furious.
“Good morning, Daniel.”
“The mortgage payment disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“The car insurance too.”
“Yes.”
He went silent.
Then he shouted.
“You can’t just cut us off.”
I looked around my new kitchen.
Coffee steamed beside me.
“I believe I just did.”
“You’re my mother.”
“And yesterday you told me to pay rent or get out.”
He said nothing.
I continued.
“So I got out.”
Melissa grabbed the phone from him.
“You’re punishing us because your feelings got hurt.”
I almost laughed.
“No.”
“I’m letting you pay your own bills.”
She became silent.
I added.
“You wanted to see how I would survive.”
I looked out at the snow covering my new backyard.
“I’m doing quite well.”
Then I ended the call.
