CHAPTER 3. THE BOARDROOM

At 8:12 the next morning, Daniel’s executive assistant, Melissa Grant, entered his office carrying a sealed legal notice.

Daniel barely looked up.

“Leave it.”

Melissa did not move.

“Sir, you need to read this.”

He opened the envelope.

Divorce petition.

Temporary financial protections.

Formal notice to the board.

Then he reached the ownership section.

His face changed.

Melissa spoke carefully.

“The board confirmed Claire still owns forty-eight percent of Mercer Technologies.”

Daniel stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

Melissa shook her head.

“The original shareholder agreement was never amended.”

Daniel stood.

“I’m the CEO.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Then fix it.”

Melissa looked uncomfortable.

“There’s more.”

Daniel froze.

“Your voting rights have been temporarily suspended pending an internal fraud investigation.”

His face went white.

“What fraud investigation?”

Melissa placed a second folder on his desk.

Unauthorized transfers.

Corporate expenses.

Vendor payments.

Personal purchases charged through company accounts.

Ashley’s handbag.

Hotel bills.

Travel.

Consulting fees paid to shell companies.

Daniel collapsed into his chair.

Then Melissa delivered the final blow.

“Claire requested an emergency board meeting for noon.”

Daniel stared at her.

“She can’t call a board meeting.”

Melissa answered quietly.

“With forty-eight percent ownership and support from two independent directors, she can.”

For years, Daniel thought power came from the title printed beneath his name.

CEO.

Founder.

Public face of Mercer Technologies.

At noon, he learned the difference between being the man everyone sees and the person who actually owns the company.
