CHAPTER 2. THE CALL AT TWO IN THE MORNING

Daniel came home at two in the morning.

By then, Noah and I were already across town.

The closets were half empty.

My jewelry was gone.

The shareholder agreement was gone.

And on the kitchen counter sat one handwritten note.

Rebecca will contact your attorney.

Daniel called me seventeen times.

I answered once.

“Where are you?” he demanded.

“Somewhere you can’t lie to my face.”

His voice hardened.

“You can’t take Noah and disappear.”

“I didn’t disappear. I left a note.”

“Come home.”

“No.”

He laughed coldly.

“You think you can scare me?”

I said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“The house is under my control. The company is under my control. The accounts are under my control.”

I looked down at the original shareholder agreement beside me.

Forty-eight percent.

My name.

My signature.

My father’s investment.

Daniel had spent years acting like Mercer Technologies belonged entirely to him.

It never had.

“No, Daniel,” I said.

“You only believed they were.”

He went silent.

Then his tone changed.

“What did you do?”

I smiled.

“Go to work tomorrow.”

I ended the call.

Noah was sleeping on the couch beside my sister.

Megan walked into the room.

“He has no idea, does he?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

She looked at the shareholder agreement.

“And when does he find out?”

I checked the time.

“Tomorrow morning.”
