CHAPTER 1. THE MISTRESS

The night I learned my husband’s mistress was pregnant, I did not confront him.

I stood outside a private dining room at the Hawthorne Hotel and watched Daniel Mercer place one hand gently over Ashley Reed’s stomach.

“Don’t worry,” he told her. “You and the baby will have everything.”

For nine years, Daniel had called me his partner.

I had helped build Mercer Technologies from a borrowed office.

I invested money from my father’s estate.

I worked without a title while raising our seven-year-old son, Noah.

Yet Daniel had spent the last year telling reporters he was a self-made man.

Ashley noticed me first.

Her smile disappeared.

Daniel turned.

Instead of looking ashamed, he looked irritated.

“Claire, this isn’t the place.”

I stared at his hand resting on her stomach.

“How long?”

Ashley lowered her eyes.

Daniel sighed.

“We’ll discuss it at home.”

That answer told me everything.

I did not scream.

I did not slap anyone.

I simply turned and walked away.

Inside my car, I called my attorney, Rebecca Sloan.

“Activate the documents.”

Rebecca became silent.

“Are you sure?”

I looked back toward the hotel.

“Yes.”

Two months earlier, I had discovered unusual transfers from company accounts.

That was when Rebecca helped me prepare everything in case Daniel was hiding more than money.

Now I knew he was.

By midnight, I had packed one suitcase for myself and one for Noah.

I removed my personal files, family jewelry, passport, and the original Mercer Technologies shareholder agreement from the safe.

Then I took Noah’s hand.

“Where are we going, Mom?”

“To Aunt Megan’s.”

“Is Dad coming?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

And for the first time in years, I left the house without asking Daniel for permission.
