CHAPTER 2. THE MAN BY THE BAR

The admiral looked directly at the woman.

“Who is your husband?”

She hesitated.

Then she pointed across the ballroom.

A senior civilian contractor was standing near the bar.

The moment he noticed everyone looking toward him, he quickly put his phone away.

Megan saw it.

So did the admiral.

He immediately signaled security.

The contractor began walking quickly toward the exit.

Two officers intercepted him before he reached the doors.

The woman stared in shock.

“What are you doing?”

Megan opened a folder.

Her husband’s company name was printed across the front.

“We’ve been investigating a leak involving this operation.”

The woman’s face went pale.

“You were investigating him?”

“Several people.”

Megan looked toward the contractor.

“But his reaction just became very interesting.”

The admiral held out his hand.

“Phones.”

The woman hesitated.

Security stepped closer.

Megan switched off the recorder.

“Everything your husband told you may now explain everything we’ve been looking for.”

The woman finally understood.

What had started as casual bragging at a reception had just become evidence.
