CHAPTER 1. THE SOLDIER WHO LAUGHED FIRST

Avery Mitchell entered the joint military training center quietly.

She was a Navy Special Warfare operator assigned to train with soldiers from several units.

Sergeant Ryan Briggs noticed her immediately.

He looked at her small frame and laughed.

“Who let the lost kid walk in here?”

Several soldiers laughed with him.

Avery ignored them and continued stretching.

Briggs stepped closer.

“Navy? They’re letting little girls play operator now?”

Avery still did not react.

Her silence irritated him more than an argument would have.

For the next several days, Briggs made humiliating her his personal mission.

He mocked her during morning runs.

Corrected movements that did not need correction.

Made jokes whenever she entered the dining hall.

Soon other soldiers started copying him.

A pink plastic tiara even appeared inside Avery’s locker.

She never complained.

She never shouted.

She simply remembered every face and every name.

Then the hand-to-hand combat tournament bracket was posted.

Avery looked at the board.

Briggs was on the opposite side.

If both kept winning, they would meet in the final.

Briggs saw it too.

He smiled.

Finally, he would get the public humiliation he wanted.
