CHAPTER 2. THE PEN IN CLAIRES POCKET

Daniel and Victoria continued discussing the deal.

Claire stood nearby pretending to organize the table.

Then Daniel received a phone call.

He stepped away.

Victoria followed him several feet from the table.

Claire looked at the contract again.

She reached into the pocket of her apron and removed a black-and-gold pen.

Her hands trembled.

She opened the final page.

Then she wrote something beside one of the clauses.

Not a signature.

A name.

ROBERT HALE.

Daniel returned just as Claire closed the document.

He looked at her.

What are you doing?

Victoria immediately became furious.

She touched our contract.

Claire stepped back.

You need to read page fourteen before you sign.

Daniel frowned.

Victoria reached for the contract.

Claire stopped her.

Please.

If you sign this, you lose control of your company.

Daniel stared at her.

And how would a waitress know that?
