Once the danger was safely dealt with, Titan finally relaxed.
I gave him the release command.
This time, he obeyed immediately.
He stepped away from the girl.
Her mother rushed forward and pulled her daughter into her arms.
The crowd that had been shouting at Titan only minutes earlier became completely silent.
The man holding the branch slowly lowered it.
The little girl looked at Titan through her tears.
He had frightened her.
But he had also kept her from moving toward something dangerous hidden beside her.
I knelt beside Titan.
He looked up at me as if nothing unusual had happened.
I put one hand against his neck.
Good boy.
Later, people would call him a hero.
But Titan did not understand any of that.
He only knew one thing.
He had detected danger.
A child was too close to it.
And when I told him to stop, he made the one decision I never expected from him.
He disobeyed me.
And that decision may have saved her.
