CHAPTER 7. THE BABY CHANGED THE QUESTION

Two months later, Claire was close to giving birth.

Daniel attended every appointment.

But he never pressured her to come home.

They spoke about the baby.

The hospital.

Finances.

And slowly, the marriage.

One afternoon Claire asked him a question.

Why did you really make the investment?

Daniel answered differently this time.

Not for us.

Claire waited.

For me.

He admitted that he had become obsessed with proving he could turn one successful deal into something huge.

He wanted to feel successful.

Powerful.

Untouchable.

Claire nodded.

That answer I believe.

Daniel looked at her.

I am sorry.

She did not immediately forgive him.

But she did not walk away either.

Later that evening, Daniel opened the kitchen drawer.

The wedding ring was still there.

He had never moved it.

Because he knew putting it back on Claire’s hand was not his decision to make.
