CHAPTER 2. THE TOY NOAH WOULDNT LET GO

Robert carried Noah back inside.

The boy was still clutching a small wooden airplane.

Robert noticed it immediately.

Where did you get this?

Noah held it against his chest.

Daddy gave it to me.

Robert froze.

The wooden airplane had belonged to his late son Daniel when he was a child.

After Daniel died, Robert believed the toy had been lost.

Victoria walked toward them.

Give me Noah.

Robert turned away from her.

No.

Her expression changed.

Robert looked at the airplane again.

Why were you trying to take this from him?

Victoria crossed her arms.

It doesnt belong to Noah.

Robert stared at her.

It belonged to his father.

Noah whispered.

She said Daddy wasnt really my daddy.

Robert slowly turned toward Victoria.

What did you say to him?

Victoria looked around at the guests.

Robert.

Not here.

But Robert no longer cared who was listening.

You sent my grandson barefoot into the snow because of a toy?

Victoria said nothing.

Then Robert noticed someone moving behind the bar.

A man had been listening to everything.

And when Robert looked at him, the man suddenly tried to leave.
