Before Daniel could ask another question, someone knocked hard on the front door.
Two police officers entered.
Daniel looked confused.
Who called them?
Emily slowly raised her hand.
I did.
Eleanor stared at her.
You called the police on your own family?
Emily stood beside Claire.
I called because Mom was scared.
One officer asked everyone to remain calm.
The second officer spoke with Claire.
Claire explained that she had discovered unusual financial documents several days earlier.
When Eleanor realized Claire had seen them, their arguments became worse.
Daniel looked toward his mother.
What documents?
Eleanor crossed her arms.
There are no documents.
Claire pointed toward the staircase.
They were under there.
One officer followed her direction.
Near the bottom step was a section of carpet that looked slightly raised.
Daniel stared at it.
That had been part of the house for years.
Nobody had ever questioned it.
The officer crouched down and lifted the edge of the carpet.
Underneath was a loose wooden panel.
Eleanors face changed instantly.
Daniel noticed.
Mom.
What is under there?
She did not answer.
