He stopped his horse about ten yards from the porch.<\/p>\n
The ranch looked deserted.<\/p>\n
The front door remained shut.<\/p>\n
The nearest corral stood empty.<\/p>\n
Nothing moved.<\/p>\n
Geller waited.<\/p>\n
\u201cMercer!\u201d<\/p>\n
No answer.<\/p>\n
One of his men laughed.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe the hermit finally understood the message.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geller spat into the dirt.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe better have.\u201d<\/p>\n
He removed a folded document from his coat.<\/p>\n
\u201cMercer!\u201d<\/p>\n
Silence.<\/p>\n
Two men dismounted.<\/p>\n
Eli watched from behind hay stacked inside the barn.<\/p>\n
Chaska crouched near him.<\/p>\n
Waya was nowhere in sight.<\/p>\n
Neither was Serina.<\/p>\n
Eli was beginning to discover that he disliked plans in which everybody else knew more than he did.<\/p>\n
One man climbed the porch.<\/p>\n
Another started around the back.<\/p>\n
Geller remained mounted.<\/p>\n
The fourth rider watched the road.<\/p>\n
The man on the porch extended one hand toward the door.<\/p>\n
An arrow hit the wooden frame a few inches from his fingers.<\/p>\n
He jerked backward.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat the\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
A second arrow landed in front of the man circling the building.<\/p>\n
Waya\u2019s voice came from a place nobody could identify.<\/p>\n
\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n
Both men froze.<\/p>\n
Geller reached for his revolver.<\/p>\n
Eli stepped out from the barn.<\/p>\n
\u201cWouldn\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geller turned.<\/p>\n
His gun stopped halfway free of the holster.<\/p>\n
Eli already had the rifle aimed at him.<\/p>\n
Geller\u2019s mouth curved slowly.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAfternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMercer.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat the name written on your paperwork?\u201d<\/p>\n
Geller held up the document.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is your last opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have not even read it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI burned the previous one. Thought I would save us time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geller stopped smiling.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou do not understand what you have done.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve heard that sentence more than once today.\u201d<\/p>\n
The porch man reached toward his weapon.<\/p>\n
A small clay ball shattered beside his boots.<\/p>\n
Powder exploded upward.<\/p>\n
Not fire.<\/p>\n
Smoke.<\/p>\n
A heavy gray cloud swallowed him.<\/p>\n
He stumbled backward coughing.<\/p>\n
Serina appeared above the roofline.<\/p>\n
Her satchel hung open beside her.<\/p>\n
Eli looked up.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat exactly do you keep in that bag?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cUseful objects.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geller finally pulled his revolver.<\/p>\n
Waya\u2019s arrow sliced past.<\/p>\n
It struck the brim of his black hat and sent it spinning into the dirt.<\/p>\n
Geller stopped moving.<\/p>\n
Waya stepped into view twenty yards away with another arrow already drawn.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe next one goes lower.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nobody moved.<\/p>\n
Chaska stepped out beside Eli.<\/p>\n
Geller studied her.<\/p>\n
Then Serina.<\/p>\n

Recognition did not enter his face.<\/p>\n
Understanding did.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not simply about Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chaska answered.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt never was.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geller\u2019s eyes settled on the silver showing near the opening of Serina\u2019s satchel.<\/p>\n
His face altered.<\/p>\n
Eli saw it.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know that seal.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geller said nothing.<\/p>\n
Eli\u2019s rifle remained steady.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geller laughed under his breath.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou people do not understand what that object is worth.\u201d<\/p>\n
Serina\u2019s expression tightened.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is not something to sell.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEverything can be sold.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eli glanced toward the smoke above his chimney, where the contract had vanished into ash.<\/p>\n
\u201cFunny. Somebody already told me that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geller looked at him.<\/p>\n
\u201cVoss does not care about your livestock.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI had begun to suspect that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe does not care about this house.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat one hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe wants what is underneath it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eli\u2019s eyes moved toward Chaska.<\/p>\n
She showed no reaction.<\/p>\n
Geller smiled.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou did not tell him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chaska\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n
Eli looked at her.<\/p>\n
\u201cTell me what?\u201d<\/p>\n
Geller began laughing.<\/p>\n
Then everything broke loose.<\/p>\n
The man on the porch drew his gun.<\/p>\n
Waya released her arrow.<\/p>\n
It struck his hand hard enough to knock the weapon away.<\/p>\n
The fourth rider kicked his horse forward.<\/p>\n
Serina threw another clay sphere.<\/p>\n
It burst nearby and filled the path with smoke, startling the horse without harming it.<\/p>\n
The animal veered.<\/p>\n
Its rider tumbled into the dirt.<\/p>\n
Geller fired.<\/p>\n
The gunshot came just before the wood beside Eli\u2019s face exploded.<\/p>\n
Eli returned fire by instinct.<\/p>\n
His bullet struck Geller\u2019s revolver and knocked it from his hand.<\/p>\n
Chaska crossed the space between them and kicked the weapon farther away.<\/p>\n
Waya had another arrow ready.<\/p>\n
Serina descended from the roof.<\/p>\n
Quiet returned in fragments.<\/p>\n
One man groaned.<\/p>\n
Another clutched his injured hand.<\/p>\n
The horses stamped and snorted.<\/p>\n
Eli walked straight toward Geller.<\/p>\n

Geller smiled.<\/p>\n
\u201cEverybody keeps saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eli released him.<\/p>\n
For a heartbeat, the ranch went silent.<\/p>\n
Serina whispered.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eli turned toward her.<\/p>\n
Her face had lost its color.<\/p>\n
Chaska stared at Geller.<\/p>\n
Waya\u2019s bow lowered a fraction.<\/p>\n
