Her black hair was pulled back, and a bow rode across her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Serina climbed down next.<\/p>\n<p>The scar on her cheek had faded into a narrow pale line.<\/p>\n<p>Her buckskin clothing carried intricate beadwork arranged in patterns Eli did not understand, though he suspected the patterns were intended to communicate something rather than merely decorate.<\/p>\n<p>Serina caught him looking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still make the same confused face when you see something beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her English was nearly flawless.<\/p>\n<p>Eli blinked.<\/p>\n<p>Serina smiled.<\/p>\n<p>For an instant, she looked much younger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou learned English.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned several things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waya tied off her horse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome less useful than others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serina looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Eli glanced toward Chaska.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned patience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waya made a skeptical sound.<\/p>\n<p>Chaska ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>Eli found himself smiling.<\/p>\n<p>The sensation felt strange on his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome inside. This heat is trying to cook the whole valley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serina removed the leather satchel from her saddle.<\/p>\n<p>The contents shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Clink.<\/p>\n<p>Eli\u2019s smile vanished.<\/p>\n<p>That sound.<\/p>\n<p>He knew it now.<\/p>\n<p>Or at least he knew where he had heard it.<\/p>\n<p>The canyon.<\/p>\n<p>Ten years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Serina saw his reaction.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand settled over the bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli generally disliked unexplained things in his own house.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, he stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>The three women entered.<\/p>\n<p>Waya looked around without pretending she was not inspecting every detail.<\/p>\n<p>Her gaze passed over the rifle beside the stove, the ammunition shelf, both windows, the bedroom entrance, the floorboards, and the distance between the table and the front door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always inspect a room like you expect to defend it?\u201d Eli asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly rooms that may need defending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>Chaska placed one hand on a chair.<\/p>\n<p>Serina sat near the cold stove.<\/p>\n<p>No one explained Waya\u2019s answer.<\/p>\n<p>Eli\u2019s attention shifted to the land document.<\/p>\n<p>Chaska followed his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>She walked to the table, picked up the paper, and read it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is one reason we arrived today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou spent ten years finding me because somebody wants to buy my ranch?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only because of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen perhaps start with how three women I have not seen in a decade know what is sitting on my table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waya crossed toward the southern window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have watched this property for three days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe watched everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what reason?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waya looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause men are coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The entire room seemed to tighten.<\/p>\n<p>Chaska placed the contract on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarlan Voss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name brought its own weight.<\/p>\n<p>Eli had never stood face-to-face with Voss.<\/p>\n<p>Few people in the valley had.<\/p>\n<p>But everybody knew what the name represented.<\/p>\n<p>During the previous few years, Harlan Voss had purchased ranch after ranch and water right after water right until his holdings curved around the valley like a tightening hand.<\/p>\n<p>He purchased from ranchers in trouble.<\/p>\n<p>From widows.<\/p>\n<p>From families weakened by bad seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever somebody refused his first offer, another came.<\/p>\n<p>Usually better.<\/p>\n<p>Then inconvenient things began happening.<\/p>\n<p>Barns burned.<\/p>\n<p>Wells failed.<\/p>\n<p>Livestock disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>A farmer lost part of his property after a boundary dispute based on a survey he claimed never to have ordered.<\/p>\n<p>No one proved Voss had arranged any of it.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow, every incident helped him.<\/p>\n<p>Eli folded his arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you know about Voss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough,\u201d Waya answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat tells me nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chaska placed the paper flat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis offer is not truly an offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had already guessed that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli\u2019s posture stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>Chaska touched the lower edge of the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou intended to sign it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>His silence answered her.<\/p>\n<p>Chaska studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou once risked your life for three strangers without calculating what it might cost you. Now, ten years later, you were preparing to surrender the only place you ever chose to build.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli\u2019s jaw flexed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you cross mountains just to criticize me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me why you are here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice became quieter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we know what this property actually is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli glanced around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA ranch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA poor ranch?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serina almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Chaska did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis place is the center of something Voss has spent years attempting to erase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli looked between the women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serina placed her leather satchel on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Its contents struck the wood.<\/p>\n<p>Clink.<\/p>\n<p>Eli\u2019s pulse accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>Serina opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were leather rolls, carving tools, folded documents, and a narrow wooden case.<\/p>\n<p>She removed the case carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Waya left the window and came closer.<\/p>\n<p>Chaska sat at the table.<\/p>\n<p>Serina opened the box.<\/p>\n<p>Inside lay one half of a silver seal.<\/p>\n<p>It was not jewelry.<\/p>\n<p>It was not currency.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had deliberately split a formal seal down the center.<\/p>\n<p>The visible design showed part of a hawk above three flowing lines.<\/p>\n<p>Eli leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>He recognized the image.<\/p>\n<p>His stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>His father had owned an old trunk.<\/p>\n<p>A similar symbol had been burned into the wood underneath it.<\/p>\n<p>That trunk disappeared after Eli\u2019s parents died.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Serina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother gave it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had been ordered never to lose it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serina glanced at Chaska.<\/p>\n<p>Chaska answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>A chair scraped loudly against the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father died when I was twelve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never knew him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chaska\u2019s gaze remained steady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur families knew him before you were born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEli\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His tone hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father raised horses, and most of them were better at it than he was. He drank too much coffee. He sang badly. He cheated at cards when he believed nobody noticed. He was not part of some secret arrangement with Apache families and pieces of silver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serina spoke carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou remember the father who raised you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may not know everything he did before you were old enough to understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli stared at the broken seal.<\/p>\n<p>The document on his table suddenly stopped looking like an aggressive land purchase.
