The demonstration ended without anyone getting hurt.

That mattered to me.

Derek, however, looked as though something much worse had happened.

His audience no longer believed the story he had been telling for years.

He stood off the mat.

“You got lucky.”

I picked up my watch from Emma.

“No.”

My mother suddenly spoke.

“Derek, stop.”

This time there was conviction in her voice.

He looked at her.

She continued.

“Laurel doesn’t need to prove anything to you.”

Derek laughed bitterly.

“Apparently everyone knew except me.”

My mother looked uncomfortable.

Then she surprised me.

“I have something inside.”

She disappeared into the house.

A few minutes later she returned carrying an old wooden box.

I recognized it immediately.

I had stored it there after retiring.

My mother placed it on the patio table.

Derek frowned.

“What’s that?”

I opened the box.

Inside were parts of a life my family had rarely seen.

Military photographs.

Commendations.

Old insignia.

Letters.

My lieutenant colonel rank.

Caleb came closer.

“Mom… these are yours?”

“Yes.”

Emma stared at one photograph.

“You never showed us.”

“I should have.”

Derek remained silent.

My mother looked through the box.

Then she said quietly.

“We should have asked.”

That sentence mattered more than any apology.

For years, my relatives had accepted my financial help.

Tuition.

Repairs.

Emergency bills.

Even expenses for Mallory and Derek when they were struggling.

Yet nobody had been curious enough to understand the woman helping them.

Derek finally looked at me.

“Why let everyone think you just sat behind a desk?”

I closed the box.

“Because I didn’t think respect was something I had to earn from my own family by listing accomplishments.”

He looked away.

Then Caleb spoke.

“Mom?”

I turned.

He was smiling.

Not because I had embarrassed Derek.

Because he had finally seen me refuse to be embarrassed by him.
