LOCKED OUT IN THE RAIN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was 4:12 on a freezing afternoon in Portland when my eleven-year-old daughter Lily discovered that her house key no longer worked.<\/p>\n<p>Rain covered the street in a silver haze.<\/p>\n<p>Lily stood beneath the porch light, turning the brass key I had given her when she started middle school.<\/p>\n<p>It slid into the lock.<\/p>\n<p>Turned halfway.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>She tried again.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Her backpack was already wet when she called me.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I was inside a basement conference room at the county courthouse preparing documents for an important custody hearing.<\/p>\n<p>There was almost no phone reception.<\/p>\n<p>When I did not answer, Lily called my office.<\/p>\n<p>Then my mother, Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Then my younger sister, Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking the lock had malfunctioned, Lily sat beneath the covered porch and waited.<\/p>\n<p>The temperature continued dropping.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, our neighbor Mrs. Dalton noticed her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you all right, sweetheart?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily forced a small smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the lock is broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Dalton offered to take her inside.<\/p>\n<p>But Lily refused.<\/p>\n<p>She still believed someone in the house would eventually open the door.<\/p>\n<p>As daylight disappeared, Mrs. Dalton returned with a warm coat and stayed nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the front door opened.<\/p>\n<p>My mother stepped outside wearing a cream cardigan and pearl earrings.<\/p>\n<p>Behind her stood Natalie and my stepfather Frank.<\/p>\n<p>None of them looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Lily slowly stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn folded her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have all agreed that you will no longer be living here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother will understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s voice remained perfectly calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis house is for family members who respect our rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked toward Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>Then Frank.<\/p>\n<p>Neither said a word.<\/p>\n<p>That was when my daughter finally started crying.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was 4:12 on a freezing afternoon in Portland when my eleven-year-old daughter Lily discovered that her house key no longer worked.
