Richard discovered I was alive the next morning.

Not from television.

Not from a reporter.

From me.

Investigators had gathered enough to confront him, and under their direction, the truth was allowed to reach him in the most direct way possible.

He was sitting in a private conference room with his attorney.

I entered on crutches.

The room became completely silent.

Richard looked up.

For a moment, he didn’t recognize me.

Then the color disappeared from his face.

I had bruises along my cheek and arms.

My ankle was wrapped.

My body hurt every time I moved.

But I was standing.

Alive.

His lips parted.

“Amelia?”

I had imagined this moment while lying awake in the hospital.

In some versions, I screamed.

In others, I slapped him.

In one particularly satisfying version, Richard fell to his knees.

Reality was quieter.

I looked at the man I had slept beside for four years.

“Hello, Richard.”

He stood so abruptly that his chair rolled backward.

“Oh my God.”

He moved toward me.

I flinched.

Not deliberately.

My body remembered him before my mind could control it.

He stopped.

Then he started crying.

“You’re alive.”

“Disappointed?”

“What?”

He looked around the room as though suddenly remembering other people were there.

“Amelia, I thought you were dead.”

“I know.”

“I tried to save you.”

There it was.

The lie.

Instant.

Smooth.

Almost offended that I might question it.

“You slipped.”

“No.”

“You were standing too close to the door. There was turbulence—”

“No.”

“I grabbed you.”

“You did.”

Hope flickered in his eyes.

“Exactly.”

“You grabbed me so you could push harder.”

His face changed.

Barely.

But I saw it.

“You’re confused.”

I smiled.

That word.

Confused.

For months, Richard had relied on versions of it.

You’re tired.

You’re stressed.

You’re hormonal.

You’re overthinking.

You’re misunderstanding.

Every phrase meant the same thing.

Don’t trust yourself.

Trust me instead.

Not anymore.

“I’m not confused.”

His attorney touched his arm.

Richard ignored him.

“Amelia, you suffered a traumatic fall.”

“I remember everything.”

“I love you.”

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I asked the question I had promised myself I wouldn’t ask.

“Did you ever?”

He stared at me.

“Did I ever what?”

“Love me.”

His expression cracked.

For one second, I saw something that might have been shame.

Or perhaps only fear.

Then he said:

“Of course I love you.”

I nodded.

“Then why did you call the estate administrator before the search was over?”

Silence.

Richard’s attorney closed his eyes.

Richard looked at him.

Then at me.

“I was preparing.”

“For what?”

“If you were gone, I needed to protect—”

“My company?”

“Our family.”

“You asked about voting shares.”

“Because somebody had to think rationally.”

“And my old will?”

His face went still.

“The copy you kept in your office. The one with the inheritance provision highlighted.”

“Amelia—”

“You thought it was still active, didn’t you?”

That was the first moment I knew.

Not suspected.

Knew.

His eyes betrayed him.

Just for a second.

I had seen Richard negotiate deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars without blinking.

But now he blinked.

I almost pitied him.

Almost.

“Here’s what you didn’t know,” I said. “Months ago, I changed everything.”

His jaw tightened.

“If I die, you don’t control Hayes Technologies.”

He said nothing.

“You don’t control my voting shares.”

Nothing.

“You don’t control my child’s trust.”

His eyes moved toward my stomach.

I instinctively put my hand over it.

“And because my death would have been suspicious, every financial benefit connected to you would have been frozen.”

“That’s not why—”

“So what was the plan?”

“Stop.”

“Was I supposed to disappear into the Pacific?”

“Stop talking.”

“Was everyone supposed to believe your pregnant wife accidentally fell?”

His composure finally broke.

“I SAID STOP.”

The room froze.

Richard breathed heavily.

There.

That was the man from the helicopter.

Not the grieving husband.

Not the charming investor.

Not the man who kissed my forehead.
