\u201cLuis.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ortega raised one hand. \u201cListen before you decide what this looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bell\u2019s wrists were not tied. He had hidden them behind his back because Ortega told him anyone watching through the broken window needed to believe he was restrained.<\/p>\n
Ortega had received orders to transfer Bell off base before dawn. The paperwork came from Danner\u2019s office and listed Bell as a suicide risk requiring emergency observation. If executed, it would place him inside a controlled medical facility where investigators could not reach him easily.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy bring him here?\u201d Nora asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe said he had evidence and would give it only to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bell removed a small memory card from inside his boot.<\/p>\n
He had wrapped it in plastic cut from a field ration package. Two identical cards were already hidden elsewhere: one with Mrs. Doyle and another inside a stamped envelope addressed to Bennett\u2019s mother. Bell had learned from Bennett\u2019s case that evidence held by one frightened soldier could vanish with a single search.<\/p>\n
After Bennett\u2019s injury, Bell had become afraid that spoken complaints would disappear. He bought a miniature recorder and carried it during meetings with Rourke. Most files contained routine instructions. One captured Rourke and Pike discussing how to frighten him after he traced the night-vision serial number.<\/p>\n
Another contained Danner\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf Hale becomes a problem,\u201d Danner said in the recording, \u201cmake her look compromised before she can make the case official.\u201d<\/p>\n
The date was three days before the dining hall confrontation.<\/p>\n
Rourke had not struck Nora\u2019s tray on impulse. Danner had learned an observer was inside the unit but did not know her true rank. Rourke had been told to provoke the temporary specialist into misconduct and create grounds to remove her.<\/p>\n
Instead, he exposed himself.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen who created the false file?\u201d Nora asked.<\/p>\n
Ortega looked wounded. \u201cMy credentials were used, but I did not do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
He showed her a copy of his access history. At 1:48 a.m., his badge opened the personnel building. At that time, dining hall video placed him in a late meeting across the base.<\/p>\n
His access card had been cloned.<\/p>\n
The maintenance building lights went out.<\/p>\n
Glass shattered near the rear wall. Ortega pushed Bell behind a steel cabinet as a heavy object struck the floor where he had been sitting. Someone outside ran toward a waiting vehicle.<\/p>\n
Nora reached the door in time to see a dark pickup leave without headlights. She memorized a dent above the rear wheel.<\/p>\n
Bell was shaking, but he still held the memory card.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey knew where I would be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He began to apologize for bringing Nora into the trap. She stopped him. The apology belonged to the men outside, she said, not to the person they had tried to silence. Bell looked unconvinced, but he placed the memory card in her hand.<\/p>\n
Ortega admitted that only one other person knew about the meeting: Sergeant First Class Wade.<\/p>\n
Nora found Wade in his office before sunrise. He did not deny sending the photograph to her, but he denied informing Danner.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have spent months protecting my retirement,\u201d Wade said. \u201cTonight I decided I would rather lose it than become the man my children think I am not.\u201d<\/p>\n
He had arranged the secret meeting because normal channels were compromised. He also identified the dark pickup as Pike\u2019s personal vehicle.<\/p>\n
Wade then opened a desk drawer and placed a folded statement in front of Nora. It described the Ortiz complaint, Rourke\u2019s threat, the false evaluation, and every occasion Wade had remained silent afterward.<\/p>\n
The statement also named three soldiers Nora had not found. One had transferred overseas. One had left the service after a breakdown. The third, Daniel Cho, had died during what the official report called an unsupervised training accident. Wade remembered Rourke ordering the platoon not to discuss the previous night.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis ends my career,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt may save someone else\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n
He signed the final page.<\/p>\n
At 6:15 a.m., General Cross restored Nora\u2019s authority after hearing Bell\u2019s recording. Military police went to arrest Pike.<\/p>\n
His house was empty.<\/p>\n
In the garage, they found the dark pickup, a badge-cloning device, and ash from burned documents.<\/p>\n
On Pike\u2019s workbench lay a map of Fort Redstone with three places circled.<\/p>\n
The dining hall. The personnel archive. And the motor pool fuel depot.<\/p>\n
Beside the final circle, he had written a time.<\/p>\n
