CHAPTER 2. WHAT EMMA FINALLY TOLD HIM

Daniel carried Sophie into another room and asked a staff member to stay with her.

Then he returned to Emma.

Tell me exactly what happened.

Emma hesitated.

Daniel.

Please.

Emma finally spoke.

Victoria had become angry after Sophie refused to change clothes for an important dinner.

The argument became louder.

Sophie started crying.

Emma stepped between them and tried to calm her down.

Daniel looked toward Victoria.

And the marks on Sophie’s face?

Victoria immediately answered.

I told you. She fell.

Emma shook her head.

That is not what I saw.

Victoria stared at her.

Be careful.

Daniel stepped forward.

No.

You be careful.

Emma continued.

Sophie tried to move away.

Victoria grabbed at her.

Emma intervened before the situation could escalate further.

Daniel looked furious.

Victoria crossed her arms.

You weren’t here.

You have no idea how difficult she has been lately.

Daniel stared at her.

She’s seven.

Victoria raised her voice.

And you let her do whatever she wants.

Daniel shook his head.

This is not about discipline anymore.

Emma looked toward the corner of the room.

Then she remembered something.

The apartment security camera.

Daniel followed her eyes.

A camera above the hallway had been recording the entire time.
