CHAPTER 1. THE MAN WHO CAME HOME EARLY

Daniel Carter came home almost two hours earlier than expected.

The luxury penthouse was unusually quiet.

Then he heard a child crying.

Daniel walked quickly toward the living room.

He stopped in the doorway.

His daughter Sophie was crouched on the carpet, holding tightly onto Emma, the family nanny.

Emma had both arms around the little girl.

Standing several feet away was Victoria.

She was holding a leather strap in one hand.

Daniel’s expression changed instantly.

Victoria.

What is going on?

Victoria lowered her arm.

Nothing.

Sophie heard her father’s voice and immediately looked up.

Dad.

Daniel rushed toward her.

The little girl buried her face against Emma.

Daniel crouched down.

Sophie, look at me.

She slowly raised her face.

There were several fresh red marks along one cheek.

Daniel went completely still.

He looked at Emma.

What happened?

Emma opened her mouth.

Victoria immediately interrupted.

She fell.

Daniel turned toward her.

Then why is she afraid of you?

Victoria said nothing.

Emma tightened her arms around Sophie.

Daniel stood slowly.

And for the first time since entering the room, Victoria looked nervous.
