CHAPTER 6. THE WOMAN EVERYONE STOOD FOR

Three months later, Eleanor returned to the same ballroom.

This time the Carter Foundation was holding its annual charity dinner.

Daniel stood near the entrance waiting for her.

When Eleanor walked inside wearing another elegant blue dress, the entire room applauded.

She looked surprised.

Daniel smiled.

You deserve it.

Eleanor shook her head.

I dont need applause.

Daniel laughed.

I know.

That was why he wanted her there.

Victoria was no longer involved in Daniels investments.

Their engagement had ended after a full financial review confirmed the problems Eleanor had discovered.

Rachel later sent Eleanor a handwritten apology.

Eleanor kept it.

Not because she wanted to remember the humiliation.

Because she wanted to remember that people could admit when they were wrong.

During dinner, Daniel sat beside his mother.

Eleanor looked around the ballroom.

Do you know what bothered me most that night?

Daniel expected her to mention the water.

Instead she said.

Everyone thought being humiliated would make me feel small.

Daniel looked at her.

Did it?

Eleanor smiled.

Only for a moment.

Then she looked around the room.

The same place where people had once stared at her in silence.

Now they stood when she entered.

And Eleanor Carter realized something.

Dignity was never something another person could pour away.
