Six-year-old Lily had been sitting on the hallway floor for almost twenty minutes when her mother finally noticed her.
Rachel stopped at the end of the corridor.
Lily?
The little girl did not answer.
She was wearing pink pajamas and holding several snack bars in both hands.
Rachel walked closer.
What are you doing?
Lily quickly pushed one of the bars toward the narrow vent near the floor.
Rachel frowned.
Sweetheart, why are you putting food in there?
Lily looked up nervously.
Because she’s hungry.
Rachel froze.
Who is hungry?
Lily pointed at the wall.
The girl.
Rachel stared at the vent.
There was nothing behind that wall except an old storage space that had been sealed years earlier.
At least, that was what her husband Daniel had always believed.
Rachel crouched beside Lily.
What girl?
Lily whispered.
She talks to me at night.
Rachel’s face changed.
Before she could ask another question, Daniel walked into the hallway.
Rachel stood quickly.
Daniel.
He looked from her to Lily.
What’s wrong?
Rachel pointed toward the vent.
Lily says someone is inside the wall.
Daniel stared at them.
Then all three became silent.
From somewhere behind the plaster came a faint sound.
A small voice.
Help me.
