Daniel came home at two in the morning.
By then, Noah and I were already across town.
He found half-empty closets and a handwritten note on the kitchen counter.
Rebecca will contact your attorney.
He called seventeen times.
I answered once.
“Where are you?” he demanded.
“Somewhere you can’t lie to my face.”
“You can’t take Noah and disappear.”
“I didn’t disappear. I left a note.”
Daniel laughed coldly.
“You think you can scare me?”
I said nothing.
“The house is under my control. The company is under my control. The accounts are under my control.”
I looked at the shareholder agreement beside me.
My name was clearly printed beneath forty-eight percent ownership of Mercer Technologies.
Daniel had spent years behaving as though my stake no longer mattered because he was CEO.
He was about to discover the difference between management and ownership.
“No, Daniel.”
His voice changed.
“What?”
“You only believed they were under your control.”
Silence.
Then he asked carefully.
“What did you do?”
I smiled.
“Go to work tomorrow.”
I ended the call.
My sister Megan walked into the room.
“He has no idea, does he?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
She looked toward the shareholder agreement.
“When does he find out?”
I checked the clock.
“Tomorrow morning.”
