The night I discovered my husband’s mistress was pregnant, I did not scream.
I stood outside a private dining room at the Hawthorne Hotel and watched Daniel Mercer place his hand gently over Ashley Reed’s stomach.
“Take good care of yourself… and the baby.”
For nine years, Daniel had called me his partner.
I helped build Mercer Technologies from a borrowed office.
I invested money from my father’s estate.
I worked behind the scenes while raising our seven-year-old son, Noah.
Yet Daniel had spent the last year telling reporters he was a self-made man.
Ashley noticed me first.
Her smile vanished.
Daniel turned.
Instead of looking ashamed, he looked irritated.
“Claire, this isn’t the place.”
I stared at his hand still resting on Ashley’s stomach.
“How long?”
Ashley lowered her eyes.
Daniel sighed.
“We’ll discuss it at home.”
That was enough.
I turned and walked away.
Inside my car, I called my attorney, Rebecca Sloan.
“Activate the documents.”
She paused.
“Are you sure?”
I looked back at the hotel.
“Yes.”
Two months earlier, Rebecca and I had prepared protections after I discovered unusual movements in company accounts.
At midnight, I returned home.
I packed one suitcase for myself.
One for Noah.
I removed my passport, family jewelry, financial records, and the original Mercer Technologies shareholder agreement from the safe.
Then I woke Noah gently.
“Where are we going?”
“To Aunt Megan’s.”
“Is Dad coming?”
I looked toward the empty hallway.
“No.”
I took my son by the hand.
And before Daniel came home, we were gone.
