Ongoing SHE CHANGED THE LOCK — THEN LOST THE HOUSE 3 reads · 4 chapters

CHAPTER 1. LOCKED OUT IN THE RAIN

It was 4:12 on a freezing afternoon in Portland when my eleven-year-old daughter Lily discovered that her house key no longer worked.

Rain covered the street in a silver haze.

Lily stood beneath the porch light, turning the brass key I had given her when she started middle school.

It slid into the lock.

Turned halfway.

Then stopped.

She tried again.

Nothing.

Her backpack was already wet when she called me.

Unfortunately, I was inside a basement conference room at the county courthouse preparing documents for an important custody hearing.

There was almost no phone reception.

When I did not answer, Lily called my office.

Then my mother, Evelyn.

Then my younger sister, Natalie.

Nobody answered.

Thinking the lock had malfunctioned, Lily sat beneath the covered porch and waited.

The temperature continued dropping.

Eventually, our neighbor Mrs. Dalton noticed her.

“Are you all right, sweetheart?”

Lily forced a small smile.

“I think the lock is broken.”

Mrs. Dalton offered to take her inside.

But Lily refused.

She still believed someone in the house would eventually open the door.

As daylight disappeared, Mrs. Dalton returned with a warm coat and stayed nearby.

Finally, the front door opened.

My mother stepped outside wearing a cream cardigan and pearl earrings.

Behind her stood Natalie and my stepfather Frank.

None of them looked surprised.

Lily slowly stood.

“Grandma?”

Evelyn folded her hands.

“We have all agreed that you will no longer be living here.”

Lily stared at her.

“Where’s Mom?”

“Your mother will understand.”

Evelyn’s voice remained perfectly calm.

“This house is for family members who respect our rules.”

Lily looked toward Natalie.

Then Frank.

Neither said a word.

That was when my daughter finally started crying.
