CHAPTER 4. WHEN EVAN FINALLY CAME BACK

Evan returned home hours later carrying shopping bags.

Margaret walked in behind him.

They expected to find me on the couch.

Instead, the house was empty.

Medical paperwork covered the floor.

One of the dining chairs had been knocked sideways.

My hospital bag was gone.

Evan immediately pulled out his phone.

That was when he finally saw all the missed calls.

Then a message appeared.

Mercy General Hospital.

His face went white.

Margaret looked at him.

“What?”

Evan did not answer.

He ran for the door.

By the time he reached the hospital, our daughters had already been born.

A nurse stopped him outside my room.

“I’m her husband.”

The nurse looked at her clipboard.

Then back at him.

“She has requested no visitors at this time.”

Evan stared at her.

“What?”

Margaret arrived behind him.

“This is ridiculous. We are family.”

The nurse remained calm.

“The patient made her wishes very clear.”

Inside my room, I could hear their voices.

For years, Margaret had believed she could overrule every boundary.

And Evan had allowed her to.

Not anymore.

My attorney arrived later that evening with a folder.

Inside were updated emergency contacts, financial protections, medical directives, and the first documents I needed to protect myself and my daughters.

I signed them carefully.

Then I looked through the nursery window.

Evan had chosen his mother when I begged him for help.

I would not spend the rest of my life waiting for him to choose us next time.

The following morning, I finally allowed him into the room.

He looked exhausted.

“Chloe… I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

“You left me while I was in labor.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I thought we had more time.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You decided shopping mattered more than believing me.”

He had no answer.

I looked toward our daughters.

“This isn’t about punishing you.”

Then I met his eyes.

“It’s about making sure they are never left helpless because you’re afraid to tell your mother no.”

Evan lowered his head.

That was the day our daughters were born.

It was also the day something else ended.

The version of me who kept accepting promises instead of actions.
