CHAPTER 1. THE DIVORCE HE THOUGHT HE WON

The day our divorce became official, Dominic Vance walked out of the Manhattan courthouse wearing the smile of a man convinced he had taken everything from me.

Natalie, his new girlfriend, held tightly to his arm.

Dominic looked directly at me.

“You didn’t only lose your husband. You lost the company too.”

I smiled.

He mistook that smile for denial.

Natalie adjusted the expensive handbag on her shoulder.

I recognized it immediately.

Three months earlier, the purchase had appeared on one of Crestwood Holdings’ corporate expense reports.

She noticed me looking.

“Audrey,” she said sweetly, “you look exhausted.”

Dominic laughed.

Once, that sound had made me feel safe.

Now it sounded empty.

Five years of marriage had ended with one judge’s signature.

But Dominic believed something much bigger had ended with it.

My influence.

My place inside Crestwood Holdings.

My family’s control over the company my father had spent decades building.

Dominic stepped closer.

“You still think no one can touch you.”

I looked at him.

“I thought our marriage failed because you couldn’t remain faithful.”

Natalie stiffened.

Dominic ignored the comment.

Then he started explaining just how powerful he thought he had become.

His mother had placed loyal employees throughout the company.

His relatives controlled procurement.

Consultants connected to his family managed major contracts.

Vendors answered to people he trusted.

“We’re everywhere,” he said. “You can’t remove us without destroying Crestwood.”

Natalie smiled.

“Looks like the princess finally discovered the castle isn’t hers.”

I looked directly at her.

“You haven’t won anything. You simply collected what I chose to leave behind.”

Dominic’s smile faded for half a second.

He tightened his grip on her arm.

“My family is buried too deeply inside that company.”

For years, I had seen the warning signs.

Inflated invoices.

Relatives hired into positions they were not qualified to hold.

Strange purchases.

Late meetings.

Vendors whose work never matched their bills.

I had noticed everything.

I had simply refused to connect the pieces.

Dominic had mistaken my silence for ignorance.

I folded the divorce papers and placed them inside my handbag.

“Then I suppose we’ll find out how deep those roots really are.”

I turned and walked away.

Behind me, Dominic laughed.

He had no idea it would be the last easy laugh he enjoyed for a very long time.
