The young waitress approached the booth nervously.
Her name was Claire.
She looked at Briggs.
Then at Daniel.
“Sir… I think I know him.”
Briggs immediately turned toward her.
“No, you don’t.”
Claire stepped back.
Daniel stood.
“From where?”
Claire pointed toward an old photograph pinned behind the counter.
It showed several men standing outside the diner years earlier.
One of them looked exactly like Briggs.
But he was wearing a military uniform.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Then back at Briggs.
“You told me you were never in the service.”
Briggs said nothing.
Rex moved closer.
The dog had recognized him before any of them did.
