Months earlier, Max had belonged to Emily’s father, Robert.
Robert lived alone after his wife died.
Max became his constant companion.
They ate together.
Walked together.
And every night before bed, Robert sat beneath the portrait and folded his hands in prayer.
Max always watched.
Then Robert became seriously ill.
Emily moved into the house to help care for him.
One evening, Robert was too weak to leave his bedroom.
Max sat outside the door whining.
Emily knelt beside him.
“He needs to rest.”
But Max refused to move.
That night, Robert passed away peacefully.
The next morning, Max walked into the living room alone.
He sat beneath the portrait.
Then, for the first time, he lifted his front paws exactly the way Robert had lifted his hands every evening.
Emily saw him.
And immediately began to cry.
