Every evening, Max sat beneath the same framed portrait on the living room wall.
The golden-brown dog would lift both front paws together and stare upward.
His owner, Emily, had seen him do it for weeks.
At first, she thought it was simply a strange trick.
Then she noticed something.
Max only did it beneath that one picture.
Never anywhere else.
The portrait showed Jesus with one hand raised in blessing.
Max would sit directly below it, lift his paws, and remain completely still.
Emily laughed the first few times.
Then she stopped laughing.
Because every evening, at almost the same hour, Max returned to the same place.
One night Emily whispered.
“What are you waiting for, buddy?”
Max looked at the portrait.
Then back at her.
And quietly raised his paws again.
